that reduce the chances of being spotted.

The convenience light that normally comes on when the door is opened is disabled. Technically you may be right that it's for night vision, but it's also to minimize the risk of being noticed at night. Before the red light was a thing, and before disabling the convenience light was a thing, suspects would bolt if they saw a car internal light coming on.
